FareClever Privacy Policy
This policy explains how FareClever and fareclever.com handle information. FareClever is published on Google Play by EaseAppSolutions ("we"), the developer name of ULANIK LTD, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 16467933), registered office 163a St Helen's Road, Swansea, SA1 4DQ, United Kingdom. We are the data controller for the uses we determine and describe in this policy: this means we are responsible for deciding why and how that information is used. Contact us about privacy at [email protected].
The app descriptions below concern the release configuration, where screen-text diagnostic logging is disabled. Development and tester builds can write recognised screen text, including addresses, to Android's local diagnostic log. Those records differ from the release behaviour described below. If you send us diagnostic records, section 8 applies.
In short
- FareClever reads ride offers on your screen to work out pounds per mile and pounds per hour. It does this on your phone.
- FareClever does not automatically upload or save pictures of your screen or the text read from them.
- Your settings are stored on your phone.
- For the free daily limit, the app sends our server a scrambled identifier for your phone, and our server records how many free checks it gave your phone each day.
- While FareClever is being tested, the app sends us usage figures once a day unless you switch them off: how long you monitored, how many offers were checked and which options are on. We ask testers to agree to this. The figures do not include your phone identifier, and our server adds them into daily totals without storing each report. They never include your screen, fares, addresses or location.
- Subscriptions are sold and paid for through Google Play. We never see your card details.
- Google's text-recognition component inside the app sends Google limited technical data. It does not send your screen.
- We do not sell data, show adverts, or track you across other apps.
1. What FareClever reads on your screen
When you start monitoring, Android asks whether you want to share your screen with FareClever. It asks every time. While monitoring is on, FareClever takes pictures of your screen and reads the text in them, using text recognition that runs on your phone. It looks for ride offers: the fare, times, distances and the rating shown on the offer. It uses these to calculate its figures and show them in a small floating box.
A picture of your screen can contain whatever is on it at that moment, such as the map, addresses, other people's names or ratings, or a notification. FareClever handles each picture in your phone's memory only to find the offer, then discards it. FareClever does not automatically upload screenshots or recognised screen text, and does not save them to your phone's storage. If you choose to email us a screenshot, we receive it as described in section 8.
The most recent offer's fare, platform, times, distances and the rating shown on it remain in the app's memory for its preview, including after monitoring stops. These values contain no names or addresses. They are not saved to storage and disappear when Android ends the app's process. The free daily limit and the usage figures (sections 4 and 5) count offers; they never include what an offer said.
FareClever reads the existing rating shown in each offer by your ride app. It may show a warning when that rating is below the limit you chose. FareClever does not create a new rating, and it never accepts or rejects a ride for you: you decide.
You can stop monitoring at any time from the app, or from Android's screen-sharing controls.
2. Information stored on your phone
FareClever stores your settings on your phone: your pounds-per-mile and pounds-per-hour limits, the platform fee percentage, what the box shows, night colours, how see-through the box is, where the box sits, the rating warning, keep-screen-awake and whether you share usage figures. It also stores a few notes about its own state, such as whether Android stopped monitoring, a short message about the last screen-capture problem, and that you agreed to the notice about screen access.
If Android backup is switched on for your Google account, Android may include these settings in your phone's backup, which Google keeps for you. Uninstalling FareClever deletes this information from your phone, but a copy may remain in your Google backup, which you manage through your Google account.
In a separate file, FareClever keeps what the free daily limit and the subscription need: the installation identifier described in section 4, the day's free checks and how many have been used, whether Google Play last confirmed that you have FareClever Pro, and the usage figures described in section 5 until they are sent. This file is left out of Android backups, so restoring a backup cannot bring back free checks already used or an answer about a subscription. Uninstalling FareClever deletes it.
3. Technical data sent to Google by the text-recognition component
FareClever reads text using Google's ML Kit. The reading itself happens on your phone. Separately, ML Kit sends Google limited technical information: device information (such as model and Android version), app information, identifiers for this installation of the app (which Google says are not intended to identify a person or a physical device), performance measurements, how the feature is configured, the size of its inputs and outputs, its version, event types and error codes. Google uses this for diagnostics and usage analytics. It is encrypted in transit, and Google says ML Kit does not pass it to third parties. It does not include pictures of your screen or the text read from them.
See Google's ML Kit data disclosure and Google's privacy policy.
4. The free daily limit
Your first day of using FareClever is free. After that, a set number of offer checks each day are free, and FareClever Pro (section 6) gives unlimited checks. The day resets at midnight UK time. To apply the limit fairly, and so that reinstalling the app cannot reset it, FareClever sends our server:
- A scrambled phone identifier. This is a scrambled, one-way version of an identifier Android gives FareClever on your phone. Android keeps it the same if you reinstall FareClever (a factory reset changes it), which lets our server recognise your phone. The original identifier never leaves your phone.
- An installation identifier. This is a random identifier created when FareClever is installed. It changes if you reinstall FareClever or clear its data.
For your phone, our server records when it first saw the phone, the last of your free first days, and the last day it saw the phone. For each day on which checks are counted, it records how many free checks it gave your phone and which installation received them. The app counts the checks you use on your phone; it does not report each offer to our server.
We use this only to run the free daily limit and to stop it being reset. We do not use it for advertising or to find out who you are.
Your phone code. This is a short code made from the scrambled phone identifier. To see it, press and hold the "Privacy policy" link at the bottom of FareClever's main screen: the code is shown and copied. If we give you free use of FareClever, for example as a tester, you send us that code and our server marks your phone as free until we remove it. The code also helps us find your phone's records if you make a request about your data (section 16).
Our server is run for us by Cloudflare, and its database is stored in the European Union. As with any internet service, Cloudflare receives your phone's internet address when the app connects. Our server uses it for one thing: to limit how many requests a single address can make each minute, which protects the service from misuse. It is not saved in our database and is not used to work out where you are.
5. Usage figures
While FareClever is being tested, usage figures are switched on from the start, and we ask each tester to agree to this when we invite them. You can switch them off at any time. While they are on, FareClever sends our server, once a day, figures about a finished day's use:
- how long monitoring was on;
- how many offers FareClever worked out for you, and how many came from each ride platform it supports;
- which options were switched on: night colours, the rating warning, which figures the box shows, keep screen awake, and keep running when the app is closed;
- the app's version.
Usage reports do not include your phone identifier or installation identifier (section 4). As in section 4, Cloudflare receives your phone's internet address when a report is sent; our server does not store it.
How they are kept. Our server adds each report into that day's totals for all drivers who share figures (for example, how many drivers monitored for between two and three hours, or checked exactly 20 offers) and does not store the report itself. While few drivers share figures, one day's totals may in practice show one driver's use, or a detail that only one driver has.
Usage figures never include pictures of your screen, the text read from it, fares, addresses, ratings or your location. We use the totals only to understand how FareClever is used and to improve it.
To stop them, untick "Share usage figures to help improve the app" near the bottom of FareClever's main screen. From then on nothing is counted or sent, and figures waiting on your phone are deleted; figures already on their way at that moment may still arrive. Figures already added to the totals stay there for the period in section 14. Reports carry no identifier, so they cannot be located using your phone code.
6. Subscriptions and payments
FareClever Pro is a monthly subscription sold through Google Play under Google's terms. Google handles your card and payment details; we do not receive them. Google gives us order information in its developer console: the order number, what was bought, the price, taxes and fees, and the order's history. It lets us find an order using the email address of the Google account that paid. We use this only to handle refunds, cancellations and questions about your subscription.
The app asks Google Play, on your phone, whether your subscription is active, and remembers the last answer on your phone. We do not keep a copy of your purchases on our own server. You can manage or cancel your subscription in Google Play; the app links to it.
7. Our website
Cloudflare hosts fareclever.com and processes visitors' IP addresses and technical request information to deliver and protect it. We have not added advertising cookies, visitor-analytics scripts or forms. Cloudflare supplies a script that protects our email address from automated harvesting.
Cloudflare processes customer logs on our behalf and certain network information for its own purposes. Its privacy policy explains those roles. Contact us about data associated with visiting our website; we will involve Cloudflare where needed.
8. If you email us
If you email [email protected], we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach. We use them only to reply and to deal with your request. Emails to this address pass through Cloudflare, which forwards them to our inbox. Our inbox is provided by Google (Gmail), which stores these messages for us. We keep your emails while we need them to deal with your request and any follow-up. We review them regularly and delete those we no longer need. You can ask us to delete your messages at any time.
Please remove other people's names, addresses and unrelated notifications from screenshots or logs before sending them, unless the detail is necessary to explain the problem. We use submitted material for your support request, not for advertising or model training. If it contains someone else's information, we minimise it or remove it when it is not needed for the request.
9. Permissions FareClever asks for
- Screen sharing, to read ride offers. Android asks you each time you start monitoring.
- Display over other apps, to show the floating box.
- Notifications, to tell you that monitoring is running or has stopped.
- Google Play billing, to sell FareClever Pro and check whether you have it.
- Internet access. Text recognition itself runs on your phone. FareClever uses the internet to reach our server for the free daily limit and the usage figures (sections 4 and 5), and Google's text-recognition component uses it to send the technical reports described in section 3.
FareClever does not ask for your location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone.
10. Who receives information
We do not sell or rent information or share it with advertisers or data brokers. Recipients for the activities described here include:
- Cloudflare: running our server and its database for the free daily limit and the usage figures (sections 4 and 5), hosting our website, and forwarding emails sent to our support address.
- Google: technical data from ML Kit (section 3), subscriptions and their order information (section 6), your phone's backup if you use Android backup, and emails you send us (section 8).
- Authorities, if the law requires us to share information.
11. Information processed outside the UK
Our server's database is stored in the European Union, which the UK recognises as protecting personal information adequately. Requests to our server and to our website are handled by Cloudflare's network, which may process them in data centres outside the UK and the EU, including in the United States. Information received by Google may be processed outside the UK, including in the United States. Screen content processed only on your phone is not transferred abroad by FareClever.
For transfers covered by their US certifications, Google and Cloudflare state that they use the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework. Other transfers may use adequacy arrangements or approved contractual safeguards, as applicable. See Google's transfer safeguards and Cloudflare's transfer information. These explain the providers' arrangements; they do not mean every transfer uses the same mechanism. Contact us to request further details or a copy of applicable safeguards.
12. How we keep information safe
FareClever talks to our server over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), and our website is served the same way. The phone identifier our server receives is scrambled on your phone first. Google says ML Kit's technical reports are encrypted in transit. FareClever does not automatically upload screen content.
13. Why we are allowed to use this information
UK data protection law requires a lawful basis for using personal information. For the activities we control, the bases are:
- On-device offer reading and display (section 1): legitimate interests in providing the requested offer-analysis tool and helping drivers assess offers. Processing stays on the phone, with the limited memory retention explained above.
- Local settings and operating state (section 2): legitimate interests in remembering the driver's choices, operating monitoring and explaining capture failures.
- Including ML Kit and its technical reporting (section 3): legitimate interests in operating and maintaining reliable on-device text recognition. Google's own processing is also explained in its linked privacy information.
- The free daily limit and the free list (section 4): legitimate interests in offering FareClever free within a daily limit, stopping that limit being reset, and giving free use to people we choose.
- Limiting requests from each internet address (section 4): legitimate interests in protecting our server from misuse. This applies to every connection the app makes, including usage reports.
- Usage figures (section 5): your agreement, which we ask for when we invite you to test FareClever. You can withdraw it at any time by switching usage figures off; this does not affect figures already sent. Before FareClever is released to everyone, we will decide how usage figures work from then on, and update this policy before that change reaches the app.
- Subscriptions (section 6): providing the subscription you buy, and legitimate interests in handling refunds, cancellations and questions.
- Website delivery and security (section 7): legitimate interests in making the website available and protecting it from misuse.
- Ordinary support enquiries (section 8): legitimate interests in answering questions, investigating reported problems and resolving requests.
- Data-rights requests and legally required disclosures: compliance with applicable legal obligations.
Legitimate interests do not override your rights automatically. The use must be necessary and balanced against its effect on you. You can object to these uses, as explained in section 16.
Screen access is optional, but monitoring cannot work without it. You can decline or stop it. This technical permission is separate from the legal bases described here.
14. How long information is kept
- Screen pictures and recognised text in the release configuration: used temporarily in memory for reading and checking offers, then discarded; not saved as files or diagnostic logs.
- The most recent offer's extracted values, including a recognised rating: kept in memory for the preview until replaced by a later offer or Android ends the app's process.
- Settings and operating state: until replaced, cleared or removed by uninstalling. Android backups are managed separately through your Google account and may remain afterwards.
- ML Kit technical data: kept by Google under Google's policies.
- The free daily limit on our server: each day's record of free checks is deleted after 7 days. Your phone's record (when it was first and last seen, and its free first days) is deleted 12 months after our server last saw the phone; a phone that returns after that is treated as new.
- Usage figures: our server adds each report into that day's totals without storing the report itself; the daily totals are deleted 6 months after the day they describe. Figures waiting on your phone are deleted when you switch them off. Figures that cannot be sent are deleted once they are more than 30 days old, the next time you open FareClever or start monitoring.
- The free list: until we remove your phone from it.
- Restore history: our database provider keeps an automatic restore history of our server's database for up to 30 days. Records we delete stay in it until it expires. We use it only to recover from a fault, and after any such recovery we would delete those records again.
- Subscriptions: the last answer from Google Play stays on your phone until the next check or until you uninstall FareClever. Order information is kept by Google under Google's policies.
- Website information: Cloudflare's published retention criteria take account of the processing purpose, sensitivity, risk and legal obligations; it does not give a single period for all website-related information. Any customer logs we use are kept only as needed to investigate delivery or security issues and meet applicable legal requirements. Contact us about a particular record or deletion request.
- Emails you send us: while we need them to deal with your request and any follow-up, reviewed regularly and deleted when no longer needed.
Where a specific legal requirement prevents deletion, we retain only what that requirement needs and explain any restriction when responding to your request. We cannot recover offer content already discarded from memory.
15. Children
FareClever is made for private hire drivers. It is not intended for children.
16. Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask to see the personal information we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to receive a copy in a portable form. Email us at [email protected].
These rights depend on the circumstances. Data portability applies to personal information you provided where processing is automated and based on consent or a contract; it does not apply to every record. A right of access may still apply when portability does not.
Your right to object: where we rely on legitimate interests, you may object for reasons relating to your situation. We must then stop that processing unless we can demonstrate overriding compelling grounds or it is needed for legal claims. Email us with the use you object to and your concern.
Usage figures rely on your agreement instead. Switch them off in the app at any time to withdraw it (section 5).
You do not need a FareClever account to make a request. Our server knows your phone only by its scrambled identifier, so to help us find your records, please include your phone code (section 4). Usage reports cannot be located using your phone code, because they do not include it or any other identifier. We may ask for the information reasonably needed to identify the relevant record and confirm your identity. We do not automatically collect or keep a record of rides. Screenshots you send us are handled as described in section 8. We will explain what we can locate and act on, and any lawful limit on your request.
To ask us to delete your data, email [email protected] and include your phone code (section 4). Within one month we will delete our server's records for your phone (when it was first and last seen, its free first days and its daily free checks) and any emails from you that we still hold, and tell you when it is done. Deleted records stay in our database provider's automatic restore history for up to 30 days, which we use only to recover from a fault (section 14). After that, our server treats your phone as new. We keep a note of the phone code and the date of the deletion for 30 days, only so we can repeat the deletion if the database ever has to be restored from its restore history; then we delete the note too. We cannot delete usage figures, because reports carry no identifier (section 5). Google keeps ML Kit's technical data and your subscription's order records under Google's own policies (sections 3 and 6).
If you are unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to us at [email protected]. We will acknowledge your complaint within 30 days, look into it and tell you the outcome.
You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
17. Changes to this policy
We update this policy whenever FareClever changes how it handles information, before the change reaches the app, and we change the date at the top of this page.
